Background and project objective
The intensive use of plant protection products in viticulture should also be reduced from an EU perspective. Fungus-resistant grape varieties (PIWIs) are ideal for reducing plant protection and relieving the burden on winegrowers. The EU has supported researchers from France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Serbia, including winegrowing institutes and wineries, with the GrapeBreed project. - with the GrapeBreed4IPM project to further develop disease-resistant grape varieties as well as the markets and consumer demand for PIWI wines.
Project structure
Overcoming traditions together - initiating transformations
The Wine Campus and the Rural Area Service Center (DLR) Rhenish Palatinate have an orchestrating role in the project (WP1) and ensure transparency between and scientific foundations within all seven work packages. The Wine Campus research results to date serve as a basis for international surveys. Sustainability, consumer expectations and implementation challenges are surveyed in the same way across countries. The project contributes empirical data on sustainable wine production in Europe and system innovation across the value chain. Overcoming barriers and creating solutions with experts, thus enabling cross-country learning and development.
Country-specific experts share their technical expertise in order to carry out a country-specific status quo analysis. Semi-annual virtual meetings to exchange experiences are also planned and ongoing information on the status of research beyond the activities of this work package is to be ensured through newsletters. To shape the future of Piwi's in a needs-oriented way, a design thinking workshop is planned to take place in 2025, which will innovatively incorporate the expectations of all stakeholder groups. The regional teams will evaluate the production and marketing status in order to jointly define cross-border measures to increase the attractiveness of Piwi's and the marketing success of sustainable wines.
